“... one of Australia's finest songsters...”
Rufous Whistler
folk & alt/country
Described by Countrytown as "one of Australia's most compelling new voices in modern folk music," Rufous Whistler is the rich, raw folk and alt-country project of songwriter Vinny Russell. After a #2 ARIA Country debut in 2025 and 100+ shows across Australia and Aotearoa/New Zealand, a second album lands in early 2027: an exposed, instinctive record about how little we really control, which patterns repeat, which we can change, and the solace found in relationships and community amid the uncertainty. Honest, funny and deeply human.

Press / Reviews
“The song, detailing the complex journey of self-conviction, comes complete with a loping rhythm section and a really nice blend of mandolin, fiddle and bouzouki that perfectly complements Vinny Russell’s melodic turns of phrase. Definitely one for fans of Iron & Wine, Calexico and Jake Xerxes Fussell.”
